James Watt Bell, son of Hugh Bell and the former Martha Watt, was born on September 8th 1820 in the Fairfield District of South Carolina.

James and his family emigrated west to the area around Oktibbeha County, Mississippi in the mid-1830's in search of fertile soil and to expand the country. They were charter members of the Starkville A.R.P. Church like many of their friends and relations.

James Watt Bell was married to Miss Elizabeth Brown, daughter of William and Elizabeth Brown, also early settlers of Starkville from the Fairfield District.

James was an Ruling Elder and a Freemason. He departed this life on the 18th day of December 1877 at the age of 57 years, 3 months and 10 days old. James was laid to rest in the churchyard cemetery of the Old Starkville A.R.P.

James' mother Martha Watt was the daughter of William Watt and the former Jane Thompson of Little River, Fairfield, South Carolina.
