Received a Civil War Pension disability caused by service as a private in Co. C, 113th Regt. Ohio Inf. Mustered in 24 Oct 1862 at Camp Chase, OH and served three years. Was granted an Honorable Discharge and mustered out 21 Jul 1865 at Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL.

Charles was married three times: first to Ann Amanda Cutler from whom he was divorced eight years later in Delaware, Delaware Co., OH. They had two sons; Willard and James Melvin. He second married Wrecta Rogers with whom he had eight children: Emma, Laura, Maggie, Charles, Samuel, Henry, Isaac and Lewis. Finally, he married the widow Betsy Ann Daugherty to whom he was married when he died.
