Shirley Maxine Birk, daughter of Wade and Mamie (McNamara) Birk, was born on Dec. 17, 1914, at Mystic. She passed away on Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at the Shenandoah Medical Center following a brief illness at the age of 92.

Growing up in Mystic, Shirley attended the Mystic schools until 1932, at which time she and her parents moved to Osceola. She graduated from Osceola High School with the Class of 1933. In 1936, the family moved to Shenandoah where Shirley has lived since. Shirley was employed by the Shenandoah Cham­ber of Commerce, Brown's Shoe Fit (General Office), Tidy House Products, Town­send Wholesale Groc­ery and World Publishing.

After retiring from World Publishing, she was em­ployed by Midstates Dev­elopment, Inc. of Sioux City as resident manager of Autumn Park Apartments in Shenandoah from 1979 until 1992. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah and was organist there for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #81 and Business and Professional Women.

Shirley was very faithful to the church as organist, always at choir practice and at the organ on Sunday mornings. She played at many weddings and funerals. She has played the organ and piano for her church since she was eight years old. Shirley was baptized in the Christian Church in Mystic and played for Sunday school. As a teenager, she played the organ for the First Christian Church in Osceola. She was very musical, also talented in violin, clarinet and piano. She received the honor of being the best musician in the Osceola High School, receiving the Musical Pin given by the school.Daughter of Wade and Mamie Birk.
