Samuel V. Sampson, born in England in 1839 immigrated to the U.S. in 1849.
He enlisted as a 22 yr. old resident of Fairfield, Jefferson Co., Iowa on June 24,1861 in Co. H, 5th Iowa Infantry. Listed as in the hospital at Jackson, Tn. since Sept.16,1862 on Co. return dated Sept.30,1862. Listed in the hospital at Keokuk, Iowa since July 18,1863 on Co. return dated Jan.31,1864. Mustered out and discharged at Chattanooga, Tn. on July 30,1864.
Samuel married Susan L. Stoner in 1868 in Ashland Co., Ohio.
He filed for an invalid pension on March 22,1897 and received certificate # 952.024.
In 1900 he was living in Agency, Iowa working as a druggist.
Gravestone Records of Wapello County, Iowa, Page 188 lists Samuel V. Sampson as died on Sept.9,1911 at age 72. It indicates he was a member of Co. H, 5th Iowa Inf. and was buried in Agency Cemetery in Wapello Co., Ia.
His widow filed for a widow's pension on Oct.23,1911 and received certificate # 745.423.

At Ageney City on the 8th died Samuel V. Sampson aged 72. Mr. Sampson was born in England and served in the 5th Iowa Infantry in the Civil War. Mr. Sampson was superintendent of the schools in this county after his return from the war.
