Clara graduated from Memphis State University and then returned home to teach in the Hardeman County Schools. Later she received her Master’s Degree in Library Science at George Peabody College for Education in Nashville. An avid reader, she always kept a stack of books close at hand and ready to open.
During World War II, when her brother Bob left to fight for his country as a tail gunner with the 8th Army Air Corps, Clara determined to help too and went to Washington D.C. to work as a civilian clerk in the Pentagon. After the war ended, she moved back to Hardeman County and took care of her elderly parents in Hardeman County until their deaths.
Then in 1954, Clara moved to Memphis, where she was librarian at Treadwell High School for 20 years until her retirement. She also taught Library Science classes in the summers at Memphis State University and was a member of Christ Methodist Church. On July 15, 1954, she married Webster Price Dunaway, a pharmacist. He passed away in 1957.
Although Clara never had children of her own, she cared deeply about her siblings and their families. When her youngest sister Romelda died leaving 2 very young girls, she helped to raise them. Clara loved children and books and connecting them, and, in turn, she was much beloved by many, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. On November 12, 1991, Clara Ethel passed away at 82 years; she was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery near her sister Romelda.
