Janet L. Griffith, 77, of Southport, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015, at Autumn Care, The Palms in Shallotte, North Carolina. She was surrounded by the love of her family and trusted caretakers.
Born July 30, 1937 in Pikeville, KY, Janet was the eldest child of the late Oscar C. Hamilton (1917-1974) and Lola M. Clark-Hamilton (1919-Deceased) of Pike County, Kentucky. She graduated top of her class from Oceana High School in 1955, where she met many cherished friends she maintained relationships with throughout her life.
After marrying her high school sweetheart James “Jim” Griffith in December 1954 and having two beloved daughters, Janet devoted her life to her family while simultaneously excelling as a strong career-minded woman. She spent over a decade in upper management for the Avon Company before becoming a small business owner. She was very proud of her childrens’ clothing boutique, Patches N Lace, and involved her sister Janive to help in her endeavors. In her next venture, side by side with Jim, Janet grew to become a well-respected real estate agent for Coldwell Banker in the Poquoson, VA. In addition to everything she did, Janet was able to fulfill a life-long goal by authoring a book entitled “Down The Creek…A Kentucky Memoir.” Hers was a story mixed with a memoir about her grandmother and the life the family led growing up in Kentucky.
Janet fiercely loved her family, near and far. Her home and heart were always open to anyone who needed it, guaranteed with one of her famous home cooked meals. She loved children, and gardening, and found beauty in all walks of life. Janet is preceded in death by her parents Oscar C. Hamilton (1917-1974) and Lola M. Clark-Hamilton (1919-Deceased), her son-in-law Mark Junglen (Deceased), her sister and brother-in-law Janive Hamilton-Leonard (Deceased) and Al Leonard (Deceased), and nephew Mike Leonard (Deceased).
She is survived by her husband of almost 61 years, James “Jim” J. Griffith (B. 1934) whom she married on December 11, 1954 in Kopperston, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1954, Page 307, Application Date: December 8, 1954) of Southport, NC; two daughters, Sherri Junglen and Rebecca Lentini (Ralph); two grandchildren Jessica and Tyler; two great-grandsons Benjamin and Berkley; five sisters, Donna Hamilton-Denando (John), Linda Hamilton-Robinson (Joe), Wanda Hamilton-Ball (Doug), Saundra Hamilton-Philyaw (Ted), Karen Hamilton-Albright (Larry); two brothers Tom Hamilton (Linda), Ron Hamilton; one brother-in-law Adrian Griffith (Joyce) and numerous treasured nieces and nephews.
