Hon. Walter McLaurin died at the Governor's Mansion in Jackson Saturday morning, after a short attack of grippe and meningitis. Walter McLaurin was born in Smith county, Miss., in 1858, and by profession was a lawyer.

He served three terms as Railroad Commissioner, with marked ability and faithfulness, and one year as Warden of the Penitentiary, and it was during the performance of his arduous duties in the last position in 1897 that his health first broke down, causing him to resign. He was frank, genial and exceedingly social in his disposition, and was probably the most popular and best known personally of all the 8 McLaurin brothers.

The Leader records his untimely death, coming as it did in the very meridian of his usefulness, with profound and sincere sorrow.
