18 Year old citizen of Mayfield, Ky. who was executed by General A.E. Payne for refusing to join the Union Army. The inscription on the marker reads: To the memory of Henry Bascomb Hicks Who was shot by order of the Federal Tyrant A E Payne on the streets of Mayfield, Ky. August 24, 1864. He was 18 years old, he was not a soldier but a schoolboy, yet when ordered to his death he refused to be blindfolded. He said, "I can look you in the eye". To this type of young southern manhood we pay all due honor and reverence. Let monument slabs forever Heroic deeds portray The chivalrous the brave the true Were men who wore the gray
