Veteran of the War of 1812

Hugh's parents, Alexander and Janet (Moore) Jameson, departed Antrim, New Hampshire in 1798, bound for Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York. Hugh was eleven years old at the time. The family farmed there for the next nine years, until the untimely death of Alexander at the early age of 59 years. Shortly afterward all members of the family migrated westerly within the state.

On August 6, 1809 Hugh married Susanna Moore, the daughter of Obediah and Sarah (Miller) Moore. The 1810 Federal census shows Hugh in Erie County, New York, living in the town of Willink - nowadays known as Aurora. A roadway that is today known as Jamison Road that runs through the town of Elma is suspected as having been named after his being one of the first settlers in the area.

In only the next few years Hugh moved his growing family to Hamburg, New York, from where he was drafted to serve during the War of 1812. He entered service on September 12, 1813, as a guard under the command of Col. Hopkins of Capt. Ezekiel Smith's New York Militia on the Niagara River "below Black Rock" for a period of three months, being discharged from service on December 13, 1813. As a result he qualified for land grants and was issued two warrants.

Hugh and Susanna continued to reside in Hamburg, N.Y. until after the death of Susanna on January 3, 1831. To this union were born seven children: Abiget, Mary Ann, Hiram Horace, Sally Hulbert, William Wray, Clark Dart and Helen Jeanette.

Hugh next married Mahala (Hull/Hall) Clark on June 27, 1833. Mrs. Clark was the daughter of Isaac and Mercy (Howland) Hall and the widow of Henry Clark, who died January 20, 1832. She was born December 20, 1804 in Easton, N.Y. Mahala had four children from her marriage to Henry Clark: Moses, Emily, Isaac and Mary.

After their marriage Hugh moved his family to Brant, N.Y. where he farmed until his death. He and Mahala had three children together: Susannah, Henry Alexander and Ruth Mercy. Mahala later moved to Evans, N.Y., where she died on December 16, 1888.
