Harriet Mather earned a B.S. degree from Denison University in 1922 and received her nursing diploma at Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati. From 1926 until her retirement in 1958, she served as director of the School of Nursing and Nursing Service at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. Her national professional activities went towards shaping the present-day professional code for nurses and the setting of standards for nursing education. On retiring, she first moved to the family home in Granville and finally settled in Florida. She received a Denison University Alumni Citation in 1967 and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1979.
