"BIRTHDAY DINNER PARTY
On Friday evening a dinner was Tweston in honor of the 88th birthday given at Hawkes Nest by Mr. and Mrs. anniversary of Mrs. Tweston's father, Edward E. Hawkes.

The hospitality of Hawkes Nest has been famous for years and the dinner of that night was up to the usual high standard from a culinary standpoint as well as in the spirit of good cheer which abounds there.

Mr. Hawkes in whose honor the family party was given was born in Lynn, Mass., in 1826, on a farm which was given his ancestors by a grant of George III of England in 1636. A part of this land with the original homestead is still in possession of the Hawkes family and occupied by descendants of the original ancestor. Mr. Hawkes' parents were Quakers and he is the last of a family of ten children, all of whom grew to middle life.

Mr. Hawkes went to California with the 'forty-niners,'going b way of Cape Horn in a sailing vessel, four and a half months being required for the trip. He returned by way of the Isthmus of Panama, crossing in a two wheel ox cart, the wheels made of solid blocks of wood.

He came to Hamilton to reside in 1862, building the home Hawkes Nest which through all these years has been the family home. He has many friends in Keokuk who will join with the Hamilton friends in wishing for him many happy returns of the day. those present at the dinner besides the hosts and the guest of honor were Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Hawkes, Mr. and Mrs. John Hawkes, Miss Hannah Hawkes and Edward E. Hawkes, Jr., of Keokuk, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Fowler and children and Miss Jennie Hawkes of Hamilton, Mrs. Theodore Hawkes, Mr. Albert Burns and Miss Jennie Hawkes of Highlands.'
