Rachel was the daughter of William & Agnes (McConnell) Abels. She had five siblings: Emmett Lee Abels (1875-1953), Matilda Elizabeth Abels Swartz (1878-1940), William James Abels (1878-1940), Florida Emma Abels Clouser (1885-1967), and Thomas George Abels (1887 -1972).

In 1900, she married Willis E. Brown who died in 1933. To their happy union they had three children: Morris R. Brown, Eva L. Brown (Lake), and Ruth Brown.

Rachel's brother, Emmett, lived with her and her family his entire life until he died and is buried in the same Cemetery. He never married. Rachel's son, Morris was a mechanic and took care of his mother and Emmett. Once his mother became ill and moved to a State Hospital, Morris continued to take care of Emmett until he died in 1953

Rachel, who lived in Versailles, MO had been a patient in the State Hospital in Fulton, MO for 2 years & 9 months when she died at 1:20 p.m. on April 26, 1952. While a patient, she had fallen and fractured her left hip. Death was caused by Chronic Myocarditis. She was 78 years old. She was buried April 28.
