Titanic Passenger. Polo player. Millionaire heir. He was the son of William Thornton Carter and Cornelia Redington. His coal baron father owned and operated mines in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. A resident of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Carter boarded the Titanic with his wife Lucile Polk Carter and their children Lucile and William. Also travelling with them were Mrs. Carter's maid, Auguste Serreplan, Mr. Carter's personal servant, Alexander Cairns, and chauffeur, Charles Aldworth. On the night of April 14 the Carters joined an exclusive dinner party held in honor of Captain Smith. The host was George Widener. Carter, his wife, and two children all survived. An investigation into the disaster would later show that Carter left the Titanic in the company of Bruce Ishmay, and arrived at the Carpathia fifteen minutes ahead of his wife and children. His 25 horsepower Renault automobile was lost in the disaster. Carter was injured seriously in 1912 while playing polo with the Bryn Mawr Benedicts against the Philadelphia Country Club's B team. He was a member of the Racquet Club and of the Sons of the American Revolution in Philadelphia, and maintained a country home, Gwenda Farm, at Unionville, Pa.
