Bonnie Sue Comer Rutherford, a former resident of Burton Manor in Aberdeen, died Jan. 2 at Citizens Care Center in Havre de Grace where she lived since August 1997. She was 95.

Born Aug. 8, 1909 in Comers Rock, Va., she was the daughter of the late Tate Comer and Nancy Cornett Comer. She married Howard Frank Rutherford and moved to Maryland around 1932. Mr. Rutherford died March 15, 1964.

She was employed at Aberdeen Proving Ground as a seamstress. She also worked at Bata Shoe Factory, sewing back seams for approximately 15 years. She left Bata to care for children in her home for several years. She was a previous member of Welcome Home Baptist Church and family said she read the Bible regularly.

In 1995, she received a Certificate of Grateful Appreciation for outstanding devotion and generosity from the Disabled American Veterans Commander Club.

Mrs. Rutherford is survived by three daughters, Nina Virginia Childers and her husband, Harrison, of Fountain Green, Betty Francis Cowan and her husband, Pete, of Fallston and Omie Irene Greer of Forest Hill; a son, Jesse Willard Rutherford and his wife, Jean, of Edgewood; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Claude Edwin Rutherford; a daughter, Gleadith Bonnie Atwood and her husband, Alton Atwood; a brother, George Wallace Comer; and five sisters, Margie Eunice Wolfe, Virginia Hinkle, Darrell Smith, Elma Thomas and Aretta Shimek.

Services will be at McComas Funeral Home in Abingdon today (Jan. 5) at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Troy R. Hall and the Rev. Richard Atwood officiating. Interment will be in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers wil be Pete Cowan Jr., Bruce Greer, Barry Greer, Bobby Shackleford, Jason Childers, Dennis Childers, Chris Porter and Wayne Porter.
