His sister Ernestine Francisca DeFontaubert said he left his house to go to San Andreas with 84oz of gold and a package of provisions that he planned to leave at Gascon Hill. The horse came home next day with some of the provisions. He was found dead about 4 rods from road from Cave City to Gascon Hill. He had been stabbed and the gold was gone.
