Woman Dies in Accident
A Benton woman was fatally injured Sunday afternoon when thrown from a car
driven by her husband in an accident north of Du Quoin.
Mrs. Nettie James, 58, died at 9:10 p.m. in Marshall Browning Hospital in
Du Quoin, about three and a half hours after the two-car accident near the
Sunfield Wye at the Rt. 51-154 junction.
District 13 State Police headquarters at Du Quoin said cars drive by Pete
James, 67, Benton and Roger E. Adams, 18, Pesotum, collided at 5:30 p.m.
Police said the James car, eastbound on Rt. 154, had stopped at the
junction. Police said that driver apparently pulled onto Rt. 51 in front of
the car driven by Adams.
Mrs. James was thrown out of the car onto the concrete pavement.
Adams was treated for minor injuries and James was not hurt, police said.
Mrs. James, of 910 N. McLeansboro St., Benton, died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday in
Marshall Browning Hospital, Du Quoin.
Mrs. James was born Oct., 20, 1905 in Jackson County, the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. George Beattie. She had lived in Franklin County 45 years.
She was a member of the Benton Church of Christ.
She leaves her husband, Pete; brothers, Ed, Bert, Clyde and Robert Beattie,
all of Benton; sisters, Mrs. Jessie Owens of Benton, Mrs. Florine
Argenbright of Moline and Mrs. Winifred McKurtis of Shelbyville, Calif.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Drake-Hobbs Funeral Home. Friends
may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
