The son of Benjamin Franklin & Mary Sophia (Cops) Brown, in 1860 he was a farmer living in Carmel, Putnam County, New York.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in New York, New York, May 11, 1861, mustered into federal service there June 3 as 1st lieutenant of Co. G, 38th New York Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company September 20, 1861.

He married New Jersey-born Caroline Victoria Barcroft and fathered Mary B. B. (b. 12/??/72), Evelyn Wolverton (b. 01/21/75 - married a Gilbert), Benjamin (b. 11/21/77), Caroline (b. 11/06/81), Gerard Crane Jr. (09/10/83), and Caroline Victoria. From about 1880, he lived with his family in Lower Windsor Township, York County.
