Prussian Army General. He rose from Lieutenant to Lieutenant General in the Prussian Army under Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm III, and instituted many reforms in the Prussian military. He served as the Emperor’s Chief of Staff during the Wars against Napoleon Boneparte, and was mortally wounded at the 1813 Battle of Lützen. The World War II Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine battleship “Scharnhorst” was named for him.
