Bruce Byron Prior, 73, 2315 Cedar Grove Road, died Feb. 24, 1989 at Kirkwood Manor Convalescent Center. He was a retired school administrator.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Church of Christ, 1665 U.S. 81, W. Bill Wiley will officiate. Burial will be in San Jose Cemetery in San Antonio.

Prior was born Jan. 24, 1916, in Sylvia, Kan., to H. W. and Melvia (nee Clothier) Prior. He graduated from Sylvia High School and attended Hutchinson Junior College and Emporia State University, both in Kansas, and Abilene Christian College, playing basketball at all three schools. After graduating from ACU in 1940, he became a teacher and coach in Boles Home school system near Quinlan, where he served briefly before enlisting in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He married former ACU classmate Billie Yater on June 17, 1941, in Houston. Prior served most of the war at Lubbock Air Force Base as a physical fitness instructor and basketball player-coach. After his military discharge, he returned to Boles Home as superintendant of schools, also serving as coach. His girls basketball team won the district title in 1947 and for several years thereafter. He received a masters degree at East Texas State University.

After 32 years at Boles Homes, the Priors retired to New Braunfels in 1978. He had been a member of Church of Christ since his early years and the couple was active in the local church.

Survivors include his wife, Billie Prior of New Braunfels, three daughters, Rita Foust of New Braunfels, Vicki Coley of Conroe and Linda Roether of Ridgecrest, Calif; one son, Paul Prior of The Colony; three sisters, Dorene Rietzke and Erma Carstens both of Salina, Kan., and Myrna Dixon of Idalou; one brother, Allen Prior of Hutchinson, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was proceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Prior.

Memorials may be made to Boles Home, Rt. 3, Box 40, Quinlan, Texas 75474.

Arrangements were under the direction of Zoeller Funeral Home.
