About 1840 Henry and Anastasia emigrated to PEI. Before that Henry spent time working in Newfoundland as an employee for the fishing companies in Ireland. It meant spending the summer season in Newfoundland then back to Ireland in the autumn. When Henry and Anastatia first came to PEI they settled in Margate, then Paddy Land (Indian River). In approximately 1853 they leased 100 acres of land from the Stewarts (Lot 1) in Spring Valley where he built a log house and cleared the land.
Henry worked as a shoemaker and was a successful farmer. In 1843 he worked for the government on Margate Road with his cart and team of oxen. He was paid the equivalent of 20 cents per day.
