Rodney Ambrose Griffin, Sr., known to many as "Rags," was born on April 26, 1954 to the late Connie James and Rebecca Brown Griffin in Santa Ana, CA. Growing up in Santa Ana, his early life was influenced by the services and activities in which he participated at St. Joseph Catholic Church with his aunt, the late Jean "Nana Jean" Sancho. As he grew up, however, under the guidance of his late Grandmother, Annie Mae "Mommie" Tripp, he became involved in the Second Baptist Church's, serving many years on its Usher Board. Later, as an adult, Rodney united with the Main Place Christian Fellowship, led by Pastor Desmond Goodloe and since 2010 he was a faithful and diligent member.

Rodney attended schools in Santa Ana; it was during his high school years at Valley High School that he met and fell in love with his wife and the mother of his children, Robin Tice. From that union, the couple was blessed with two beautiful children, Sherice Ronae and Rodney Ambrose, Jr.

Throughout his life Rodney was a kind and gentle person, always with a big smile on his face. He was a true and loyal friend to all with whom he shared his life and always had positive and encouraging words to share. He demonstrated a compassionate and caring demeanor for those with whom he came in contact. He was devoted to his family. This devotion was clearly evident in the time and attention he put into helping his sister, Connie Jene Griffin Jones, operate the Southwest Community Center—keeping alive the dream of their grandmother Annie Mae Tripp. Rodney spent many hours at the Center, helping the staff in every way possible—driving the van for pick-ups and deliveries, painting and repairing whatever he could, helping clients and doing whatever he saw needed to be done. His constant watch over the Center while it was being rebuilt after the fire was a service that was invaluable. Rodney was a Handy Man for many with his unique ability to rebuild and refurbish furniture, but, most of all; he was an inspiration to all with his ability to stay positive no matter what the circumstances.

A year ago, Rodney was diagnosed with Leukemia. Yet, through it all, he always held his head up, never once complained or asked the question "why me?" His father, Robert Young, Sr., when told of Rodney's death, stated "God don't make mistakes."

Rodney is survived by his father: Robert (Odessa) Young; children: Sherice Ronae (Ritchie) Moss, Rodney Ambrose Griffin, Jr.; grandchildren: Ritchie, Sherice, Clarice, Jasmine, Romaine, Zion, Rodney, Lyric and Sanae; siblings: Reva (Julius) Johnson, Scottie (Carol) Young, Miriam Franks, Art (Joyce) Young, Debbie (William) Coles, Gregory (Shyray) Young, Connie (John) Jones, Robertha (Leroy) Towles, Carmellia Young Williams, Lois Brooks, Dana (Steve) Day, Chris Duhart, Dwight (Mercedes) Duhart; bonded cousins: Anthony "Big" and Antonio "Bop" Sears and Norman, Ray and Roger Sancho; uncles: Tyrone, Clistus, Claddis and Timothy Tripp; aunts: Margaret, Janet, Charlene, Mary Helen, Romona, Amelia, Regina and Mina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family members and friends.
