Civil War Confederate Naval Officer. He commanded the Confederate ironclad "Virginia" (ex-"Merrimac") after her battle with the USS "Monitor." When the Federals captured Norfolk in May 1862, Tattnall ordered the "Virginia" to be blown up, for which he was court-martialed and acquitted. He later commanded the naval station at Savannah, Georgia, as a Commodore.
