John Valentine Alley was the son of John Alley who came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin and was part of the Old 300 Hundred families that settled here.
John later moved west to California as part of the California Gold Rush where he married and had a family. Following the death of his wife, Mary Frances Palmer, he moved his family back to the Midwest. He resided at first with his son, Marion Frances Alley and then later moved to Texas. He is buried in Sonora as is his son, Marvin C. Alley.
