Son of Lars Johnson, step-mother Bertha. It is believed his mother passed around 1847 in LaSalle County, Illinois. Jacob had a sister Julia.

Jacob was first married to Sarah (nee Olson) she passed sometime around 1898 in Vinton, Iowa. Seven children were born to this union. Isabelle, Martha, Sarah, Johanna, Juliane, Elizabeth and John.

Jacob's second marriage was to Sisela (nee Swenson). Ten children were born to this union. Samuel, Anna, Lawrence, Allen, Oscar, Clarence, Sadie, Daniel, Daniel and Henry
