Harold Bert (Harry) Mills, 75, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at The Villages Regional Hospital in The Villages, Florida. He was born on December 6, 1937 in Jacksonville, FL to James Howard and Ida Mae (Johnson) Mills.
Harold grew up in Jacksonville, FL where he graduated from Andrew Jackson Senior High School in 1955. After high school he served in the US Coast Guard as a Radioman, First Class aboard the USS Bramble. During his tour on board the Cutter Bramble, he took part in the historic first crossing of the Northwest Passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1959, Harold joined the City of Miami Police Department where he retired as a Lieutenant and Staff Assistant to the Chief of Police in 1978. During his tenure with the Miami Police Department he also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Florida International University in 1976. Upon his first retirement, Harold obtained his Real Estate Broker's License and was awarded "Top Producer for 1980" in his first year with Century 21, Towne Realty in Tallahassee, FL. He then began work for the State of Florida's Office of Comptroller as a Financial Investigator and retired from the state in 1997 as an Area Financial Manager for the Tallahassee and Jacksonville Offices.
Harold married Peggy Ann Hitchcock in 1958 at Perrine Peters United Methodist Church in Perrine, FL. They were happily married for over 54 years.
Harold was an active member of New Covenant United Methodist Church and served as a Stephen Minister in The Villages, FL. He enjoyed reading, golfing, biking, fishing, playing the trumpet, amateur radio, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his strong love of God, of family, and how he enjoyed reminiscing about his days in the Coast Guard and on the Police Force.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents James Howard and Ida Mae Mills; and his sister Juanita Genell Mills.
Harold is survived by his wife Peggy of The Villages, FL; his son Robert (Diane) Mills of Tallahassee, FL; his daughter Christine (David) Schulker of Beaumont, TX; his daughter Sandra Mills (Rikk) Salamat of Toronto, Ontario; his daughter Meredith (Steve) Robertson of Lake St. Louis, MO; his grandchildren Courtney, David Jr., Robby, Andrea, Asha, Lennox, Silas Harold, Simone, Skyler, Keegan; and his loving nieces, nephews and numerous other relatives.
A memorial service will be held at New Covenant United Methodist Church, 3270 Woodridge Drive, The Villages, FL at 10:00 am on July 15, 2013. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at a reception in the church afterwards. Burial will follow at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL.
