Clarence E. "Red" Tharp, 93, Richmond, died March 1, 2005, at Countryside Place Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mishawaka, after an extended illness.

He was born April 6, 1911, in Alexandria, the son of Clarence I. and Amanda M. (Ruth) Tharp, and was a former resident of Alexandria. He had resided in Richmond from 1944 until moving to Mishawaka in 2003.

He was affiliated with Johns-Manville Corp., formerly of Alexandria, for 46 years. He was plant manager of the Johns-Manville Plant in Richmond for 21 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a life member of the Alexandria Eagles Lodge 1771, Johns-Manville Quarter Century Club, and a former member of the Richmond Elks Lodge and Rotary Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Karen (David) Kovalcin of Jamesburg, N.J., Cheryl (Pete) Biggs of Richmond and Sandra J. (Robert) Tryner of Granger; first wife, Vida Tharp of Richmond; significant friend, Lenora Whalen of Mishawaka; three stepdaughters, Sue (John) Porterfield of Lyons, Colo., Carol (Jim) Banning and Patricia Sowers, all of Richmond; stepson, Tom (Tye) Hill of Richmond; three sisters, Margaret (Jesse) Embree, Catherine Green and Phyllis (William) Howard, all of Anderson; brother, Robert (Sharp) Tharp of Elwood; six grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife,

Norma Jean (Long) Tharp, in 1994; and a sister, Dorothy Carroll.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with Pastor Jerry Thomas, First United Methodist Church, Alexandria, officiating. Cremation will follow with private interment of cremains in the IOOF Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
