In 1910, Jaroslav Francis Smetanka married Rose Vanek, the daughter of Rev. Vaclav Vanek, and settled in Chicago. Smetanka received a doctor of law degree from the University of Chicago. In 1920, Jaroslav and Rose were living with Vaclav Vanek and family, at 2324 Central Park Avenue, and Jaroslav worked for his father-in-law in several family endeavors.
On April 20, 1920, Dr. Smetanka was appointed Counsul for Chicago by the new Czechoslavk government. Semtanka died December 27, 1937, following an operation.
