Thomas W. Sutherland was an early settler and attorney in San Diego, California. Sutherland and his wife Joanna (nee Hudson) had one son in 1850. In 1850 he was Acting Alcalde (Mayor) of San Diego, the last alcalde before California became a U.S. state. Sutherland was the San Diego city district attorney under the U. S. Government, and District Attorney in 1851. In 1852, he moved to San Francisco.
