~~Obituary~~

DIED: -- At the home of her son Albert, Mrs. Gertrude TeStroete, on Wednesday Dec. 30th (sic), after a long illness, at the age of 77 years. The deceased belonged to a family that was one of the earliest settlers of the town of Holland. Funeral occurred from the residence of her son, Saturday Jan. 2nd, Rev. Van Griethuisen officiating. The remains were interred at the East Oostburg cemetery. The surviving son and two daughters have the sympathy of the entire community in their great loss.

**Janna Geertruid (b. 26 Nov 1816 in Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands per the Gelders Archief: https://www.wiewaswie.nl/nl/detail/52769918) was the daughter of Andreas Peters (b. 31 Mar 1774; d. 18 Sep 1820) & Willemina Nijenhuis (b. Mar 1777; death unknown.) She is named after a sister, also named Janna Geertruid, who was born 17 Sep 1815 and died 03 Dec 1815.

Janna Geertruid married Garrit Jan te Stroete on 15 Apr 1846 in the Netherlands before they emigrated. Garret & Janna left 04 May 1846 on the S.S. Ceres from the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands and arrived 07 Jul 1846 in the port of New York.

In America Garrit Jan & Gertrude had three children: Alydia (b. 19 Jun 1851), Dena (b. Sep 1853) & Albert (b. 19 Feb 1858).

In the 1880 U.S. Census 3 generations of the family are residing together: Garrit Jan & Gertrude, son Albert & his 1st wife Hattie nee Heinen and grandson Garret John. Their surname is spelled "Strooter" by the enumerator.

Gertrude's current gravestone was not erected until 1914. Why the birth date on Janna Geertruid's gravestone is erroneously engraved as 11 Oct 1815 must be a result of the time span, immigration, and lack of a written record from the Old World to assist her children in their memories & knowledge of their mother's vital statistics. (The Te Stroote family is in possession of a 26 Aug 1914 receipt for "2 St. Cloud Red Markers 1-4 X 1-4 X 2-6" for $38.00 from Henry Scheele, Jr., advertising "granite, marble, stone, cement, fire brick, clay" on same receipt.)
