Native of County. The deceased was born in this county in the old Rowlett Creek community, about twelve miles southwest of McKinney. Her maiden name was Jonnie Ellen Huffman. She was the daughter of Dr. John S. Huffman, who was a practicing physician, and who died about the close of the Civil war, and is buried at Rowlett Creek. She was born December 25, 1851, and was therefore, 78 years old on last Christmas day. Her mother was Mrs. Mary Elizabeth ( Perrin) Huffman, who died about eighteen years ago. Her paternal grandparents were Uncle Johnnie Huffman and wife, who came to Collin county in 1846, the year after Texas was admitted to statehood.
The Huffman family settled in the Rowlett Creek section of our county, where they took a prominent part in the affairs of our county and its development throughout the years, and still have many descendants living in different parts of this county and other portions of Texas. ***
Married In 1868. The deceased was married in November, 1868, to John Henry Allen, who passed away in McKinney in 1919. The deceased and her husband spent their active lives on their farm near Lebanon or Rowlett, but sold their land in 1918, bought a home and moved to McKinney, where each of them spent the latter years of their lives. She professed religion and joined the Baptist church in early girlhood. She was a cultured woman who did much reading and during her active life she was often a contributor to the religious and secular press. ***
Her Family. She was one of a family of ten children of Dr. and Mrs. John S. Huffman-one boy and nine girls, five of them surviving her death as follows. Mrs. Laura Largent of McKinney, Mrs. Ruth Baines of Dallas, Mrs. Amanda Sloane of Humble, Mrs. Rebecca Browning of Blanco, Mrs. C. M. Largent of Merkel. Her deceased brother was William G. Huffman, who died a few years ago in Dallas. Her three deceased sisters were Mrs. Ella Gallup, who died in West Texas; Mrs. Sue Noel, who died in Oklahoma, and Mrs. Carrie Sterling, who died at Houston.
Mother of Six Children. Mrs. Allen was the mother of six children, two sons and four daughters, three of whom survive as follows: Hon. Will H. Allen of San Antonio, Mrs. Robert Duncan of Linden, Cass county, Texas, and Miss Laura Sue Allen, a McKinney school teacher, who resided in the home with her mother. The three deceased children were Walter Allen, who died when he was 6 months old: Miss Rose Anna Allen. who died in McKinney in 1922, and Mrs. R. F. Gurney, who died at Dublin about seventeen years ago. The deceased also reared two grandchildren who are Frank Gurney and Ivan W. Allen.
She lived a life of constant service to her loved ones, neighbors and those about her who needed friendship and sympathy. Her life was replete with loving sacrificial service. Her bright mind and tender heart endeared her to every acquaintance. Her passing is sincerely mourned by her loved ones and friends. But all are comforted by the knowledge of her unfaltering faith and the many assurances she left behind of her translations to the real of eternal bliss, where pain, partings and sorrows never come.
