Garrit Jan was the son of Hendrik te Stroete (b. 25 Jan 1767; d. 09 Apr 1845) and Hendrika Halderdijk/Haank/Haanlo (depending upon the source) (b. 28 Jan 1783; d. 04 Nov 1845). DoopBoek Aalten (1790-1811): "Garrit Jan z.v. Hendrik te Stroete en Hendrika Halderdijk". This record book states his date of birth as 05 Apr 1802 & his baptism as 11 Apr 1802.

Garrit Jan te Stroete married Janna Geertruid Peters in Arnhem, Gelderland Province 15 Apr 1846 before the two of them left for America. They emigrated from the port of Rotterdam, Netherlands 04 May 1846 on the S.S. Ceres and arrived in the port of New York 07 Jul 1846. They had no children.

In Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, USA Garrit Jan & Janna Gertruida had three children: Alydia (b. Jun 1851), Dena (b. Sep 1853) & Albert (b. 19 Feb 1858).

Garrit Jan & J. Gertruida signed a warranty deed in Nov 1857 for land in Holland Township, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin by placing an "X" on the appropriate lines, indicating that they were unable to write & also probably unable to read -- not uncommon for their time & circumstances. Their names have been written in beautiful cursive by someone else. The Te Stroote family still has the original document concerning this piece of property described as "The North half of the North West Quarter of the South East Quarter of Section number Six in Township number thirteen North of Range number twenty three East". Son Albert's obituary states that when he was three years old the family moved from Wilson Township to Holland Township to settle on this parcel of property, therefore it would stand to reason that between 1857 & 1861 a dwelling had to be constructed for them to live in. The homestead was still in their descendants' possession in 2013. (The Wilson Township land where they had been residing was taken over by Garrit Jan's brother Arnoldus, who had immigrated to America in 1847 with another brother Lammert. This property was just north of present day Oostburg & the dividing road between the 2 townships, the northwest corner of what is now Town Line & Hartman Roads.)

In the 1880 U.S. Census 3 generations of the family are residing together: Garrit Jan & Gertrude, son Albert & his 1st wife Hattie nee Heinen and grandson Garret John. Their surname was spelt "Strooter" by the enumerator.

Garrit Jan died on 06 Sep 1885. His current gravestone was not erected until 1914. (The Te Stroote family is in possession of a 26 Aug 1914 receipt for "2 St. Cloud Red Markers 1-4 X 1-4 X 2-6" for $38.00 from Henry Scheele, Jr., advertising "granite, marble, stone, cement, fire brick, clay" on same receipt.)

**The spelling of Garrit Jan's last name is always recorded as "te Stroete" before he immigrates to America. It appears that his children made a conscious decision to change the spelling to "Te Stroote". This spelling is reflected on all of their gravestones -- except the oldest grandchild Garret John & his descendants, who kept the old world spelling of "Te Stroete".
