Catherine Debnam was born in England, about 1638, a daughter of William Debnam and Catherine Jennings. William brought his family to Virginia sometime after 1638. After William's death in Virginia in 1657, his widow Catherine, married Rev. Charles Grymes. Grymes died in the winter of 1661/2 and left a 600 acre tract in "Skinker's Neck", present day Caroline County, called the "Grymes Tract", to be divided between his Debnam step-daughters, Catherine wife of Robert Taliaferro and Mary wife of Lawrence Smith. Catherine, the wife of Robert Taliaferro, had six children with Taliaferro, her first husband. Talliaferro died around 1670.

It is known that Cadwallader Jones' wife was named Catherine. They had one daughter, named after his mother, Frances, who was born about 1675-80. According to a deed recorded in Hardin County, Kentucky in 1804, from Col. Francis Slaughter to his son-in-law James Crutcher, for a tract of land in Caroline County, Virginia, the ownership of the land is traced as follows: "First from Cadwallader Jones, to his daughter, Frances Jones, who married Robert [sic] Slaughter............"

There is a compelling argument to be made that Katherine Jones was the widow of Robert Taliaferro, and that she had a second husband, Cadwallader Jones, with whom she had one child. On November 20, 1672, "Mrs. Katherine Taliaferro" was granted 600 acres of land for transportation of 8 negroes and 4 English servants. Since Katherine Taliaferro received this patent, it is obvious that she was a widow and therefore Robert Taliaferro had died before 1672. She immediately assigned the land to her son Robert Taliaferro. (Rappahannock County records D.B. 5, p. 99). The ownership of part of this land was disputed by a man named Henry Corbin. The dispute was settled on January 6, 1673, when Corbin's widow gave up the land in return for satisfaction received from Cadwallader Jones. Obviously, Jones was Robert Taliaferro's step-father at this time, or why would he have paid Corbin's widow to settle the dispute?

This was the first mention of Jones in the records of Old Rappahannock, but from then on, Jones was very active in the area, buying and selling land. Many of the transactions were witnessed by Taliaferro sons. Katherine died about 1686 in Gloucester County, Virginia and is buried in the Warner Hall Graveyard in Naxera, Gloucester, Virginia.

According to CHARLES TALIAFERRO Sr,. author of THE TALIAFERRO FAMILY THREE CENTURIES IN AMERICA , 1998: "Very little is known of the life of ROBERT TALIAFERRO and the small amount that is known is taken from scattered land records. One VERY IMPORTANT item concerning the history of ROBERT TALIAFERRO is the CORRECT NAME OF HIS WIFE. The correct name of his wife is disputed among historians and genealogists. The dispute is not who his wife was, but her exact name. In all sources, relating to the early family, the name is shown being 'SARAH GRYMES daughter of Rev. CHARLES GRYMES." (note by owner of memorial) It is highly unlikely that Catherine was the daughter of Charles Grymes. Her mother's first husband, William Debnam, lived until 1657, and Catherine was born around 1638. Catherine's mother married Charles Grymes after the death of her first husband. Therefore, Catherine was the STEP-DAUGHTER of Grymes.

He goes on to say: In the VIRGINIA MAGAZINE, Vol. 56, pages 208 -210, in an article written by Mr. JOHN BAILEY CALVERT NICKLIN, appears a version of the correct name of ROBERT TALIAFERRO. Mr. NICKLIN quotes several legal documents and he ends with the expressed opinion that the wife of ROBERT TALIAFERRO was KATHERINE DEDNAM, daughter of KATHERINE and HENRY DEDNAM; that the widow of HENRY DEDMAN later married Rev. CHARLES GRYMES; thereby making KATHERINE DEDNAM [daughter of KATHERINE and HENRY DEDNAM] the step daughter of Rev. CHARLES GRYMES."

He goes on to say in 'TYLERS QUARTERLY Vol 18, page 165' in an article by W. B. McGROARTY that 'Text of a record in the Virginia Land Office at Richmond, page 445, Vol. of Land Grants 1666 - 1679; a grant from Sir WILLIAM BERKELEY to ROBERT TALIAFERRO son of ROBERT TALIAFERRO, 779 acres in the freshes, Rappahanock County, south side adjoining HENRY CORBIN and Mr. GRYMES, 17 March 1672/3, 100 acres being his due as grandchild of ye said. GRYMES..."

He goes on on to state: "From the last note that the ROBERT TALIAFERRO mentioned...as the grandson of Rev. CHARLES GRYMES was made in the year 1672/3 and that the reference of KATHERINE DEDMAN as grandmother was not made until 1718 [in the VIRGINIA QUARTERLY magazine, Vol 56, pages 208 - 210, some 45 years after the reference of 'grandson of Rev. CHARLES GRYMES' was made."

The author goes on to state: "It is believed by this writer that the CORRECT NAME of the WIFE of ROBERT TALIAFERRO is SARAH GRYMES, the daughter of the Rev. CHARLES GRYMES and his wife KATHERINE DEDNAM." (note by owner of memorial) very poor research, Grymes was her STEP-FATHER.

"Rev. CHARLES GRYMES was born circa 1612 in Igtham, Kent, England; died circa 1662 in Virginia; matriculated at Cambridge at 18 and became rector of Hampton Parish in York County, Virginia in 1645."

In addition to the above there is a record of correspondence in the Archives Department of the U.S. Congressional Library between GEORGE WYTHE and THOMAS JEFFERSON "in connection with the history and origin of the [TALIAFERRO] family. Mr. WYTHE'S interest in the matter was due to the fact that his wife at the time - his second wife - was ELIZABETH TALIAFERRO, daughter of Col. RICHARD TALIAFERRO, of James City County." On pages 723 - 724, VIRGINIA FAMILIES Vol. IV, and from GEORGE WYTHE's correspondence is stated: "ROBERT TALIAFERRO was a man of consequence for he had large grants of land in Gloucester County and on the Rappahannock River, including one of 6,300 acres patented jointly with Colonel LAWRENCE SMITH. He married SARAH, daughter of Rev. CHARLES GRIMES, and aunt of Hon. JOHN GRIMES, receiver general of Virginia. He died about 1682...
ROBERT TALIAFERRO and SARAH GRIMES had issue: ROBERT, FRANCIS, JOHN, RICHARD, CATHERINE...CHARLES..."
