Walter E. French, 91, of Elk Point, South Dakota, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point.

Walter was born on December 11, 1921, in Elk Point to Edmond and Agnes (Fenton) French.

As a young man he served as a member of the 147th Field Artillery Unit of the South Dakota National Guard. His unit was sent for training in Asia in the fall of 1941. The unit left Pearl Harbor to begin its training mission one day before the attack. He spent the remainder of the war in the Philippines and Australia.

After the war, Walter married Mary Ellen Heck. They were married on October 27, 1945 and remained devoted to each other until her passing.

Walter's dedication, which showed in his marriage, also showed in his professional life. He was a hard-working family provider who worked for the Curry Seed Company for 60 years.

In his personal life Walter was known as a kind-hearted man who was slow to anger, never had a bad word to say about anyone, and always had a Curry Seed pen to give to whomever he visited with.

Walter was survived by his son, Bill French of Elk Point, South Dakota; his daughter, Betty (Marty) Frost of Sioux City, Iowa; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen French; his sons, Robert French and Larry French; his parents, Edmond and Agnes French; four sisters; three brothers; and his grandson, Scott Williams.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 11, 2013 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. David Roehrich officiating.

Cemetery:
