US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II

Wallace Wesley Marsh enlisted in the Marine Corps 18 April, 1941 from Iowa Falls, Iowa. Completed recruit training in the 1st Recruit Training Battalion, MCB San Diego, CA. During June, 1941 assigned to Machine Gun Group, 2nd Defense Battalion, MB Parris Island SC.

During October, 1941 embarked Naval Vessel at Charleston, S.C. for movement overseas. Assigned to 155mm Artillery Group, 9th Defense Battalion, Naval Base, Guantanamo, Cuba. 9 January, 1942 promoted to Private First Class. During April, 1942 assigned to HQ and Service Battery, 13th Defense Battalion on Cuba. 7 October, 1943 assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, 4th Marine Division, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA.

10 January, 1944 embarked USS Warren (APA-53) at San Diego for movement overseas. 22 January, 1944 at Lahaina Roads, Maui. 31 January-13 February, 1944 participated in combat operations and occupation duties in the Marshall Islands. 8 March, 1944 arrived in Hawaii based at Camp Maui near Haiku.

12 May, 1944 embarked Naval Vessel for landing rehearsals at Kahoolawe and Maalaea Bay, Maui. 20-29 May, 1944 in Pearl Harbor. 8-11 June, 1944 at Eniwetok, Marshalls. 15 June, 1944 landed on Yellow Beach Two Saipan D-Day and participated in combat operations until 9 July, 1944. Wounded in Action on Saipan.

23 July, 1944 embarked an LST at Saipan. 24 July, 1944 landed on White Beach One Tinian D-Day and participated in combat Operations until 31 July, 1944 when evacuated and hospitalized. When released assigned to A Company, 25th Marines at Camp Maui.

10 January, 1945 embarked LST 928 at Maui. 11-22 January, 1945 in Hawaiian waters and Pearl Harbor. 11-16 February, 1945 in the Marianas. 19 January, 1945 landed on Blue Beach Iwo Jima D-Day and participated in combat operations until Killed in Action 28 February, 1945.

Awarded the Silver Star (Posthumously).

Next of Kin: Parents, Mr Roy H and Mrs Marie Marsh, 816 Rocksylvania Avenue, Iowa Falls, Iowa.

Initially buried in the 4th Marine Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima.

1948 returned to US for permanent burial in Iowa Falls, Iowa.
