Joe was the son of the late Alexander Leighton Avery and Margeurite McConnaughey Avery. He graduated from Morganton High School in 1933 and Clevinger's School of Business. He served in World War II from 1942 until 1946 with the U.S. Army 7th Armored Division.
Joe served his community in many ways. He was manager of Burke Dairies, worked for First National Bank, State Bank of Burke, Northwestern Bank, and First Union Bank. He was a branch manager for Northwestern and First Union Bank.
Surviving Joseph Avery are daughter Mary Shelton Avery Morrow, and a sister, Nan Avery Westmoreland (now deceased), and several grandchildren.
