Aug. 29, 1938-June 14, 2013
LeRoy Jerald "Bud" Squires, 74, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, June 14, 2013 at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Services for LeRoy are scheduled for 11 a.m., Monday, June 24 at Lund Lutheran Church in rural Detroit Lakes, with Pastor Jim Osvold officiating.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 23 at the David Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
LeRoy was born to Jerald and Audrey (Ol-son) Squires on August 29th, 1938 in Mahnomen. He graduated from De-troit Lakes High School with the Class of 1957.
LeRoy and Anita Smith were married on Feb. 23, 1963 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, where they resided and raised their children.
LeRoy served in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1962 as a firefighter and rescue crewman. After the service, he returned to his hometown of Detroit Lakes. He and his father formed and organized Squires Body Shop. After the death of his father, he built and moved to 1121 Jackson Ave., where he operated and managed his business for almost 40 years, selling it and retiring in 2001.
Throughout his lifetime, LeRoy had a servant's heart, serving his community in numerous organizations and posi-tions:
· The Detroit Lakes Fire Department, where he also helped organize and start the Diving team and Rescue squad.
· Served on the Detroit Lakes Planning Commis-sion and the Becker County Planning Com-mission.
· He was one of the original stockholders of the Industrial Development Corporation, where he served on the board and was president during negotiations and the pur-chase of the 640 acres of the new Industrial Park.
· Was a member of the Detroit Lakes Jaycees, including many other positions of the organization: State vice president, U.S. director and Minnesota state president. While with the Jaycees, he was recognized as one of the 10 outstanding U.S. directors in the nation, one of the 10 Outstanding Young Men of Minnesota, given a JCI Senatorship and a Statesman Award.
· Served as a member of the Detroit Lakes Vo-Tech (M State-Detroit Lakes) Advisory Board, Chairman of the Auto Body Committee and also a Substitute Instructor of Auto Body.
· Member of the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the board for two years.
· Member of Friends of the Wetlands, where he served as president, vice president and treasurer.
· Past member and pilot of Resort Region Flying Club and past member of the Becker County Sportsman's Club.
· LeRoy continued to be active in the Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club until his death. He was an active member since 1975, president of the club in 1982-83 and was Rotarian of the Year in 2012. He had perfect attendance for 37 years!
Leroy was quick to lend a helping hand, served up with a great big smile and a positive attitude. He had a special gift of making new members feel welcome and was truly an example of Rotary's mission of "service above self."
LeRoy faithfully attended worship for many years as a member of Lund Lutheran Church (LCMC), rural Detroit Lakes, where he served as church council chair and congregational president. He also served as chair of the Lund Endowment Fund, and volunteered many hours on other committees and church outreach visitations. His joyful faith in Jesus Christ encouraged many others in their spir-itual journey, especially those who were strug-gling.
He also served as parish chairman for Bakke, Richwood and Lund parish.
LeRoy had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, woodworking and carving, gardening, reading, making maple syrup and meat processing including jerky, brats, beer sticks and smoked fish, which he was always sharing with others.
He enjoyed travelling across the states to visit classmates, service buddies, family and friends.
Surviving LeRoy are three children, David Squires and Alan Squires of Detroit Lakes and Ann Squires of Moorhead; two grandchildren: Joshua (Stephanie) Squires of Austin, Texas, and Lawrence Wallace of Moor-head; two sisters, Beverly Runger of Casselton, N.D., and Judy (Don) Schatz of Fargo; two great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
