BOONE, NC ~ Ms. Kay Reid Fulkerson, 52, of Blanwood Drive died Monday morning, Sept. 24, 2001, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 24, 1949, in Mount Airy, Surry County, to Vernis Wall Reid Atkins and the late Claude Wesley Reid.

She graduated from Surry Central High School and received a bachelor's degree in child development and a master's degree in special education from Appalachian State University.

Ms. Fulkerson was director of Child and Family Services and Northwest Regional Administrator for United Cerebral Palsy for the state of North Carolina. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Reid Fulkerson, of Washington, D.C., and John Alan Fulkerson, of Wilmington; two daughters, Jill Marie Fulkerson, of Atlanta, Ga., and Julie Ransdell, and husband, Ed, of Charlotte; her mother, Mrs. Vernis Wall Atkins, and stepfather, Aubrey Atkins, of Mount Airy; and a sister, Jenny Reid Jessup, and husband, James, of Johnson City, Tenn. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Jake and Carly Jessup of Johnson City, Tenn., and Kelly and Ryan Soltvzoff of Davie County.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jeffrey W. Reid.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10:30 to 11 a.m. The Rev. Jim Dannals and the Rev. Chuck Blanck will officiate.

Graveside services and burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Pine Hill Friends Meeting Cemetery in Ararat in Surry County with Pastor Billy Britt officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Thursday evening at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

At other times, friends may call at the Fulkerson residence, Blanwood Drive, Boone.
