William Floyd Harrell was born in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia, a son of John James Harrell and Lovey Caroline Fletcher. They moved to Texas in 1870 after the Civil War.

William married Susan Angeline "Susie" Shirley on 10 Aug 1882 in McKinney, Collin County, Texas. They had four children in Texas (Jasper Melvin Harrell, Sarah Salina "Lina" Harrell, Mary Maudie Harrell Johnson, and Brittie Lee Harrell Beesley) before moving to the Chickasaw Nation in about 1890. Hattie Vera Harrell Stewart and John Floyd Harrell were both born in Chickasaw Nation.

William was small, less than 5'10", weighed about 130 lbs, and always wore a mustache. He was a farmer-rancher and always rented.

He was much loved by his family and his grandchildren.
