Mrs. A. S. Applewhite Died In Jackson Sunday

Lumberton members of the I. E. Bass family were called to Jackson early Sunday because of the death of Mrs. A. S. Applewhite, the former Miss Gay Bass. Mrs. Applewhite passed away at the Baptist Hospital where she had been a patient for at least three months.

Funeral services were held from the Wright and Ferguson Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday with Dr. W. Douglas Hudgins and Dr. W. A. Hewett officiating. Interment was in Lakewood Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers were Judge Fred J. Lotterhos, Gus H. Ford, Homer Lee Howie, Lamar Kincaid, V. J. Stricker and Allen Maddox.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. W. C. Thompson, Dr. Boyd C. Edwards, Dr. George Owens, Dr. R. G. O'Farrell, Dr. Temple Ainsworth.

Mrs. Applewhite was a native of Marion county and the widow of Dr. Applewhite who was a prominent physician of Jackson for about 45 years. Dr. Applewhite practiced at Lumberton a few years before going to Jackson. He has been dead for a good many years. Mrs. Applewhite remained in Jackson where she resided at 742 North State Street, and her gracious personality and her generous hospitality made her a beloved citizen of the capitol city. Her children, Dr. Norman E. Applewhite and Henry Applewhite, both of Reno, Nevada; Mrs. Wirt A. Yerger of Jackson, Mrs. James W. Cassedy of Alexandria, Va., and Mrs. William T. Saunders of Hampton, Va. have all been popular and loved in Jackson.

Mrs. Applewhite was the daughter of Mrs. I. E. Bass of Lumberton who is nearing her 99th birthday. Besides her mother she is survived by three brothers, Dr. C. C. Bass of New Orleans, Rear Admiral I. E. Bass of Washington, D. C. and I. H. Bass of Lumberton; three sisters, Dr. Cora Pigford, wife of A. A. Pigford of Lumberton, Dr. Elizabeth Bass of New Orleans and Lumberton, and Mrs. Henry W. Greer of Lumberton; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
