Frankie "Hippie" Nelson, Jr., 57, self-employed carpenter and handyman, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at his residence on East 18th Street.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Arlington Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Franklin Delano Nelson, Sr. and Nina McMillion Nelson. Hippie, as everybody knew him, was a jack-of-all trades and always kept busy. Always a happy person, he had a smile on his face and a song in his heart. He befriended everyone and never met a stranger. Always willing to lend a helping hand, he lived life in his own way, not caring for the material things. He will be sadly missed by his family and the multitude of friends that knew him.

Survivors include his son, Scotty (Brandy) Nelson of Hohenwald; grandchildren, Damron Nelson and Serenity Nelson, both of Hohenwald; brothers, Ricky (Joy) Nelson and Glen (Kristin) Nelson, both of Columbia; sister, Donna (Billy) Manier of Columbia; step-mother, Margie Nelson of Columbia; mother of his son, B. J. Boyd of Columbia; special nieces, Brandy Norman and Kristen Benderman; several other nieces and nephews; and special friend whom he thought of as his mother, Darlene Thomason and her son Steve Thomason.
