Boxer Rebellion Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Hampshire, Engaland, he served as a Captain in the Royal Marine Light Infantry. On June 24, 1900, the enemy, consisting of Boxers and Imperial troops, made a fierce attack on the west wall of the British Legation at Peking, China. Captain Halliday, in command of twenty Marines, led the way and immediately engaged a party of the enemy. Before he could use his revolver, however, he was shot through the left shoulder, at point blank range, fracturing the shoulder and carrying away part of the lung. Notwithstanding the nature of his wound, Captain Halliday killed three of his assailants, and telling his men to carry on and walked back unaided to the hospital, refusing escort and aid so as not to diminish the number of men engaged in the sortie. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross on January 1, 1901. Remaining in the Service of the King, he rose to the rank of Adjutant General of the Royal Marines and held this position until his voluntary retirement when he was Knighted Commander of the Bath in 1930. He died at age 95 in Surry, England.
