Being suspected of Southern leanings John was denied the right to vote in the 1862 Delaware election by Federal troops in what was described as a political coup d'état by the investigating legislators. *

He fell off the Methodist Protestant Church roof while putting new shingles up. He was caught by 2 carpenters as he yelled 'I'm going to die'. A doctor called it as apoplexy and heart failure and he remained unconscious until his death.

His marriage to Julia was her 2d marriage.
