JACOB H. DEMING
Early Monday morning, the friend of our boyhood, youth and early manhood - Jacob Henry Deming - departed this life, being in the 36th year of his age. He was the son of the late Horatio S. Deming and was born on a farm in the Boquet Valley, June 23, 1867. His early education was obtained in his native school district and in the Elizabethtown Union Free School. In the spring of 1885 he went to work for John S. Walker in the old Rice grist mill, continuing there till the autumn of 1887 when he went to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take a course in the Eastman Business College. In the spring of 1888 he returned to Elizabethtown and purchased the stock of groceries of Owen R. Irish, then located where M.C. Stanton is now doing business. He continued in the mercantile business until the early summer of 1890 when he sold out to M.F. Noxon. During the summer of 1890 he clerked at the Mansion House (now Deer's Head Inn) and in 1891 he managed the old Valley House (now Maplewood Inn) for G.W. Jenkins.
In the autumn of 1891 he purchased John S. Roberts' stock of goods and went into business in the Bullard block, so called. October 6, 1892 he married Miss Mabel Noxon, 2nd daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.F. Noxon, the Rev. A.W. Wild performing the ceremony. Early on the morning of January 24th, 1895, the Bullard block was consumed by a mysterious fire and the deceased was a heavy loser. In a few weeks, however, he purchased the site of the Bullard block and also additional land and in the summer of 1895, he erected the block in which the Post Office, Simon Cautin's store and H. E. Beekman's store are located. In December 1895, he moved his goods from the old Noble store to the rooms now occupied by Simon Cautin and there did business till the spring of 1896 when he sold out to Roberts & Nichols.
For the past six years Mr. Deming has been in poor health, not able to perform much in the way of labor, Deceased is survived by a widow, one son, mother, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held at his late home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the remains being buried among his kindred in the Boquet Valley Cemetery.
