A native of England, "Henry" lived in Calhoun County, Illinois. It is possible that he came to the states on 18 Oct 1851 on board a ship called the Tempest. He was listed as a 19-year-old stowaway and was found hiding after 5 days at sea. With him was a 19-year-old Irish servant girl named Cath Reilly.

Henry married Mrs. Sarah "Elizabeth" (nee Alford) Snider on 21 Nov 1856 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 11 children. They also raised a child, known as George Francis Blackwell, who was born in 1851. His biological parents are not known at this time.

Henry served in the Civil War with Company C of the 97th Illinois Infantry. His wife, Elizabeth, remained at home with George and the 2 young children who had been born to the Blackwells during the early years of their marriage. She was also expecting their third child at the time.

The 97th was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered in on 16 Sep 1862. The unit was ordered to Kentucky and made its way to Arkansas by 1863, where they were involved in the assault and capture of Fort Hindman. They fought in the Battle of Port Gibson, the Battle of Champion's Hill and the Battle of Big Black River in May of 1863.

The 97th next took part in the Siege of Vicksburg in Mississippi. After that, they were moved to New Orleans and had provost duty there until May 1864. In 1865, they were ordered to Florida and then were part of Steele's Expedition to Mobile, Alabama. The 97th helped capture Fort Blakely in Apr 1865. In May, they were sent to Galveston, Texas and were mustered out there on 29 Jul 1865. The regiment lost a total of 233 men to wounds or disease.

Henry was a corporal when he received his discharge from the service. The Blackwells filed for his Civil War pension on 24 Jul 1890.

Henry lived until 1900. At the time of his death, he was 67 years, 9 months and 5 days old.

He was survived by his wife, Elizabeth, who passed away in 1907. His son, George, died on 07 Feb 1934.
