Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. As a young 17 year old private in the 23rd Regiment of Foot British Army during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, he volunteered to accompany fellow officer Thomas Bernard Hackett in rescuing a fallen fellow comrade. The wounded corporal was lying helpless and exposed to heavy artillery fire and together they were able to pull him to safety. For this act of bravery, he was given the Victoria Cross which is the highest and most prestigious award that can be given to a British soldier. He passed away from tuberculosis at age 47. Today, his Victoria Cross is on display at the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum at Caernarfon Castle in Gwynedd, Wales.
