Lucille Frances Butler Shirley was born March 28, 1916, in Georgetown, Kentucky, to the late Kaner and Ella Mae Banks Butler. She began her education in the public schools of Georgetown and upon graduating from Benjamin Davis High School, attended Kentucky College (now University).

She was united in marriage to the late Robert Spencer Shirley; they resided in Anderson. She served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II and is an honoree on the Women in Military Service for America, Women's Memorial Monument in Alexandria, Virginia. Following her military service, she became a civil servant and retired from Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, in 1972.

She was a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E Church, Goodwill Club, The Lunch Bunch Club; a charter member of the Women in Military Service of America, The National Association of Black Military Women, Women Army Corps Veterans Association-Hoosier Chapter 93, a life member of the American Legion Post 0517, Xenia, Ohio; Ladies Auxiliary, Anderson,; and a volunteer at Saint John's Medical Center. She also enjoyed golf and bowling and she bowled on several leagues.

She now leaves to cherish her memory, her nieces, Cheryl D. Butler, Carolyn Thompson, both of Dayton, Ohio; nephews, James L. (Shirlely) Patterson of Hampton, Va.; William R. (Estella) Patterson of Omaha, Neb.; Pastor Fredrick B. (Delois) Patterson of Georgetown, Ky.; and Kaner (Stephanie) Butler, Jr. of Dayton, Ohio; and a host of other great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.

She also leaves to mourn and cherish her memory, her treasured, devoted caregiver and dedicated friend, Sharon Glazebrooks, and her family, as well as special friends, Aliceann C. Sanders of Lexington, Ky., and Joretha Cooley.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Kaner and Ella Butler; her beloved husband, Robert S. Shirley; her sister, Corinne Butler Patterson; brother, Kaner Sr. and his wife, her special sister-in-law, Elosie Butler; and her brother, Robert Butler.

Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Allen Chapel A.M.E Church, 1610 Sheridan St., with the Rev. John L. Lambert officiating. Burial following at Anderson Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of Flowers, contributions may be made to Allen Chapel Building Fund.
