John served with the 16th Massachusetts Infantry and the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.

John was living at the "Soldier's Home" in Tilton, New Hampshire at the time of his death. Today, this facility is known as the New Hampshire Veterans Home.
