He married twice, first to pianist Yaltah Menuhin, sister of Violinist Yehudi Menuhin, and later to Adelina Valazza. Rolfe was a native of Minneapolis and studied at the University of Minnesota law school. During the 1940s, he served in the Army adjutant general's office, rising to the rank of captain.
