Herbert D. Dale Bennett Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Herbert Dale Bennett, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars and a Topeka native, died Tuesday, June 25, 2013 in Ridgecrest, Calif. He was 83. Dale was born June 23, 1930 in Topeka to Herbert Preston Bennett and Esther (Nisbeth) Bennett.
He attended schools in Topeka, graduating from Seaman High School in 1948.
He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Ann Jacques, on Nov. 11, 1950 and enlisted in the Navy.
He began his career in the Navy as a seaman recruit and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant in the supply corps. His career in the Navy took him to Michigan, California, Texas and the territory of Guam in the United States as well as numerous deployments aboard ships that allowed him to visit several foreign countries.
Following his retirement from the Navy in 1975 he started a second career working for Kerr McGee Chemical in Trona, Calif., retiring a second time from what was then North American Chemical Company. After retirement, Dale kept busy with bowling, hiking - attending several Outward Bound courses - and volunteering with the Police And Community Together program of the Ridgecrest Police Department.
He was also a member of the 1999 - 2000 Kern County Grand Jury, Kiwanis International and other civic and service organizations. He returned to Topeka many times over the years for vacations, family and school reunions as well as other events.
Dale is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Ridgecrest, Calif.; son Gary D. Bennett and wife, Susan, of Yucaipa, Calif.; daughter Gail (Bennett) Noble and husband Larry, of Garden Grove, Calif.; daughter Luella (Bennett) Gatfield of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughter Kathy (Bennett) Olsowka and husband, John Sperry, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and son John D. Bennett of Ridgecrest, Calif.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters Joyce Radford and Brenda Hart and husband Marvin, all of Topeka as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held July 8 at Davidson Funeral Home starting with visitation at 9 a.m. A worship service will follow at approximately 10 a.m. with graveside services at Westlawn Memorial Garden at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the USO or Seaman Congregational Church in Topeka.
