Longtime Sonora resident John G. Holloway died Dec. 18 at a Sonora hospital. He was 86.
Mr. Holloway was born in Watseka, Ill., and lived in Sonora for 30 years. He was a P-51 pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 8th Air Force, 339th Squadron, 505th Fighter group. He flew in 66 combat missions.
While serving in World War II, he was shot down and was repatriated by the French Under-ground to Omaha Beach in June 1944. He was awar-ded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
After World War II, he returned home to South Bend, Ind., and graduated in 1949 from Notre Dame University with a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering. He worked for 30 years in the aerospace industry on guidance and controls. The last project he worked on was the Hubble telescope. He retired in 1977.
Mr. Holloway enjoyed spending time with his family, wood working and classical music. He also enjoyed flying his 1946 Hascombe airplane, and astronomy, having built his own observatory. He loved a good joke and his afternoon "toonie," a martini.
He was preceded in death in 1977 by his first wife of more than 35 years, June Soderberg Holloway; and his parents, Ferol and Chauncey Holloway.
Mr. Holloway is survived by his wife of 12 years, Beverly Haidlen of Oakdale; daughters and their spouses, Jill and Walter Reed of Sonora and Judy and Ric Costales of Fort Jones, Siskiyou County; grandchildren Jorian Reed, Kiley Firth, Silas Costales and Forrest Costales; and great-grandchildren Troy and Adrian Costales, Cade and Levi Costales and Shea and Hayden Firth.
Services will be held in February.
